Updates from PS 166 Guidance Counselor
This week, our guidance counselor, Ms. Buell, presented to both K–2 and 3–5 classrooms to help students navigate the excitement and big feelings that often come with the end of the school year. She revisited the mood meter and guided students in recognizing when they are in the yellow zone—those high‑energy moments of enthusiasm or restlessness—and how to use calming strategies to bring their bodies back to a peaceful state.
As part of our schoolwide SEL focus, every class will also participate in a special end‑of‑year project. Each class will create a unique flower that answers the prompt: “What makes you feel peaceful?” These flowers will come together to form our PS 166 Peaceful Garden, a beautiful bulletin board display celebrating mindfulness, community, and the peaceful moments that help us grow.

RULER Approach: Four Anchor Tools
The RULER Approach, Developed by researchers at Yale University, is an evidence-based social and emotional learning program dedicated to enriching the lives of educators, students and families.
RULER is an acronym that stands for Recognizing, Understanding, Labeling, Expressing and Regulating emotions. The RULER approach increases his students’ emotional intelligence, social skills and academic performance. .The classroom Charter, the Mood Meter, The Meta-Moment, and the Blueprint are four tools used in each class to help students regulate their emotions, in order to be successful in school. Additionally, each grade level has an SEL block of time to support lessons for social-emotional development through Ruler’s curriculum
PS 166 incorporates RULER program into our approach to social and emotional learning. Studies show that RULER programming improves academic performance, decreases aggressive behavior, and enhances learning climates.
